Three of the UK’s overseas territories, the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, and the British Virgin Islands, were a crucial part of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Today they are ranked as the top tax three havens globally, where secrecy laws and no/low tax regimes are exploited by multinational companies who artificially shift their revenues to these islands so they can escape paying taxes in the mostly global south countries where they operate.

$500bn is stolen globally in this way every year, ending up in financial centers like London and New York, and ultimately as profits in the pockets of western capitalists. The cost to the global south of these economic crimes is engineered underdevelopment, instability, and extreme poverty.
